“And is there a reason these aren’t a computer file? I think there’s half a forest in this office.”

“I keep saying that I will scan the information and then there is always another assignment.”

“And the assistant that signed my letter?”

He laughed now, realizing he had been caught.

“Your illusion of an assistant, huh?” she said, laughing as well.

He held his hands up as if caught in the act. “You got me. You won’t hold it against me now, will you?” he asked, his voice dropping into the sexy growl that was like second nature to him.

“Now why would I? I haven’t held anything else against you,” she replied, winking one eye.

“No?” he asked now searching her face.

She looked up again and realized this question held layers of emotional unknowns. She knew he wanted to know if she’d forgiven him for a trespass that he’d not made against her, but for which her family suffered. She shrugged. “I don’t know how to answer that, exactly. Your issue is with Gianni and maybe Adrianna. It was never really with me,” she said quietly.

“Yet you were affected, nonetheless and it did shape your view of me. Do you think you could ever see me differently?”

She wanted to ignore that question. She wasn’t ready to delve into how she was feeling about him yet. She wasn’t ready to admit that he had touched her heart in a way she had never let any other man. She was still trying to figure out how he’d gotten that close to her. “I really didn’t know you, Riccardo.”

“And do you think you know me now?”

“I think I know you a little. I think you are a man with regrets over decisions you made when you were little more than a boy playing the role of a man. Your actions aren’t anything new. The real tragedy is that Adele couldn’t get over you or the situation or something. Something made her feel she couldn’t live for her daughter. The only person that really counts in all of this is Adrianna. Regardless, you are stepping up now and at a time that she really needs… at a time that we all really need you. It’s an opportunity to redeem yourself, for sure. But tell me, after everything is settled, will you ever be able to forgive yourself?”

Riccardo suddenly felt thirsty for a glass of brandy. That was one of the few things that wasn’t down there. He wondered if she would feel safe enough to go back upstairs. He could answer her question. He didn’t need to really think about it. The answer was no. How could he ever forgive himself when his actions may have been responsible for a young girl’s life ending before its time. Who knows what her potential could have been. She was such a beautiful, vivacious young woman, full of life and plans. Plans that she never would get to see realized. He would always feel responsible for that. All he had were the memories
